Flush-mount systems
In-Roof & Flush Solar
In-roof — or flush-mount — solar sets the array into the roof plane on a weathertight tray, so the panels sit level with the surrounding tiles rather than raised on brackets. It is the cleanest way to integrate standard PV modules, and a natural fit for new builds and re-roofs.
Solar set into the roof, not on top of it
An in-roof system replaces a section of tiles with a purpose-made tray that carries the panels and channels water around them. The modules sit flush with the roof surface, framed by a neat flashing kit rather than perched above the covering on rails and hooks.
The result is a markedly calmer roofline. The array reads as a recessed dark rectangle within the tiles instead of a floating slab, and the deep shadow gaps and visible brackets of a typical on-roof installation simply disappear.
The middle path on cost and appearance
In-roof solar sits between on-roof panels and full solar tiles. It uses standard, high-output PV modules — so it keeps the strong economics of conventional panels — while delivering much of the integrated, flush appearance that makes solar tiles desirable.
For many self-builders and re-roofing homeowners, that balance is the sweet spot: a clean, contemporary roof at a sensible cost per kilowatt.
Specified for the roof it sits in
Because an in-roof tray becomes part of the weathering, detailing matters. We specify the tray system and flashing to suit the covering and pitch, set the array out to keep margins even against ridges and verges, and coordinate with the roofer so the interface is right first time.
On new builds we detail the in-roof zone into the roof design from the outset; on re-roofs we integrate it as the covering is replaced, avoiding the cost of disturbing a finished roof later.
Frequently asked questions
What is in-roof solar?
In-roof solar sets the panels into the roof plane on a weathertight tray, so they sit flush with the surrounding tiles rather than raised on brackets. It gives a cleaner, more integrated appearance than standard on-roof mounting while using the same PV modules.
Is in-roof solar cheaper than solar roof tiles?
Generally, yes. In-roof systems use standard, high-output panels within an integration tray, so they keep much of the cost advantage of conventional panels while achieving a flush, recessed look closer to that of full solar tiles.
Can in-roof solar be fitted to an existing roof?
It is best specified as part of a new build or re-roof, because the tray replaces a section of the covering. Retrofitting to an undisturbed roof is possible but involves lifting tiles, so it is most economic when the roof is being worked on anyway.
